New Investment Wave: Maldives Resort Development Accelerates in 2026

Despite a bumpy year for arrivals, capital is continuing to flow into Maldives resort development. Bank lending to the tourism sector increased year-on-year, financing both new resort construction and major renovations of existing properties — a signal that operators and lenders remain confident in the destination's long-term demand.

The investment comes as traveler preferences continue shifting toward ultra-luxury and all-inclusive stays, wellness-focused programming, and even private yacht experiences, with trip lengths of nine to twelve nights becoming increasingly common among high-spending visitors. Resorts such as Cheval Blanc Randheli and Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll, Velaa Private Island, and adults-only wellness retreat JOALI BEING in Raa Atoll exemplify the kind of high-end, experience-led product that is drawing renewed investment.

At the same time, guesthouse bednights on local islands are growing, suggesting investment capital and traveler demand are expanding at both ends of the market — ultra-luxury resorts on one side, and accessible local-island stays on the other.
